BUT HOW MANY FIRST AIDERS DO WE REQUIRE?

The relevant regulations regarding first aid training are the "Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981". These regulations explain the differences between a 'first aider' and an 'appointed person':

In any company, the number and type of first aid personnel would be based on an assessment. In assessing need, employers need to consider:

  • workplace hazards and risks;
  • the size of the organisation;
  • the organisation's history of accidents;
  • the nature and distribution of the workforce;
  • the remoteness of the site from emergency medical services;
  • the needs of travelling, remote and lone workers;
  • employees working on shared or multi-occupied sites;
  • annual leave and other absences of first aiders and appointed persons.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

Like most of our competitors, we advise the use of personal protective equipment when carrying out first aid. However, unlike some of our competitors, our approach is that if we are going to advise & train workplace first aiders to use equipment such as face shields and personal issue gloves THEY SHOULD BE ISSUED WITH THESE ITEMS ON THE COURSE.

At Lancashire Training, we include them in our student kits as part of the course cost, NOT as an extra.

Before booking courses elsewhere, ask if they are included. True, it doesn't actually affect the course content, which is dictated largely by the Health & Safety Executive, but we feel that it's an essential attention to detail which really shouldn't be overlooked.
